I simply dont believe, frog form or no, Tiana would have given up her dream for him. Not in the way he was presented to her in the film. Not only was it a business transaction for them to have that kiss, but bribery to boot. The last measure is setting the film in the south between 1910-1930. Well, Im from the south, and I study that time period as a bit of a hobby. I completely understand with white washing (pun intended) the era, and romanticizing it to a degree, I mean we are talking about a children's animated feature, but I was a bit dismayed by making all the relevant black characters poor. Big Daddy (who in my opinion was the best animated character in the entire film, the angles on his face, his gestures, fantastic) was King and Charlotte was the princess, who seemingly at the end of the film chose to 'give' Tiana the prince... So I offer this, a somewhat reworked outline of most of what has been presented in the film. Please indulge me. The beginning would stay the same, thats fine. When Naveen arrives he tries to do so, inconspicuously. Hes out and about, a free spirit, slightly naive, because he is royalty, but he loves the passion he gets from Jazz. He attendant, Lawrence tells him, "We are out of money." The Prince says, "Were in America, we can get a job." They go to the cafe where Tiana is working for a meal and Naveen overhears her dreams and plans. He likes her passion, that and shes really pretty. But he tries to keep a low profile, although the news paper hes burying his face in has his picture on it. He realizes they have no money to cover the check, but he had a locket an old family heirloom, the last bit of currency they have. He leave that and they sort of dine and dash leaving Tiana with it as a 'tip'. 'Good luck' the note with it reads. Tiana takes it to a jeweler who tells her is from Maldonia and very old. Oh my goodness, that young man was the Prince! The shop buys it from her, just enough for the down payment on her restaurant! Dr. Facilier knows who the Prince is, and after Tiana the locket he gets his shadow to steal it from the shop window. He lures the Prince and Lawrence into his shop where at this point you can get rid of lawrence all together, and have the Dr. turn into Naveen. But the prince gets away, and in order to have enough power to keep the spell, the Dr. makes a deal with the Devil. All the souls in New Orleans for some help. Hence the shadows. The party happens as planned, Tiana is robbed of her dream by the bankers, but this time, when she goes to kiss the prince, its out of thanks, not payment.
